Things are weird. Traveling is very weird.

Family needed help out west. Work was closed. This wasn’t a “road trip” kinda road trip, but I just couldn’t bring myself to leave my gear at home.

Looking at my images I noticed there aren’t a lot of people in them, and that’s not on purpose.

November 2019.

We’re getting towards the end of fall foliage, so I decided to lug the RZ67 to Central Park to get some shots. I started to lose light pretty quickly (even though it was about 3 PM, go figure) so all of these were taken handheld. I’m surprised at how sharp they turned out! But part of me wonders how much sharper they could’ve been if I had been able to use a tripod and a smaller aperture… Maybe next year, ha!

Cue fun kitschy fall activities! This is a pumpkin maze called ‘The Great Jack-O-Lantern Blaze’ in upstate New York. It was cold and rainy, and dark out. Perfect for Delta 3200!

This was a very difficult scan, and with hindsight I should’ve had the lab do it. Live and learn!

Every time I shoot with my Mamiya 6 I always think something is missing. I might just be tired of square format - who knows! I did, however, recently find a near-mint Mamiya RZ67 on eBay and took the plunge into glorious 6x7. This thing is a monster. Batteries not included; light meter required.

As such, my photo hobby has gotten prohibitively expensive. I decided this time to have the lab do the developing only while I do the scanning on my V600, at least for medium format. I think I got the colors right!

I was in the mood to shoot some black and white and I realized I’ve bought a lens from Japancamerahunter but never shot his film! It has a dedicated following and I can definitely see why. Real moody stuff.

I’ve had my M6 for 5 years and have always used the light meter. I’ve depended on it so much in part because I don’t want to mess up a shot, but sometimes I’d overthink things and miss the opportunity!

One bright afternoon I decided to take the batteries out of the meter and walk around just using my own eyes and the Sunny 16 rule to gauge the exposure. It was pretty freeing to not use those little red arrows as a crutch. I shot a whole roll in 45 minutes, making note of the aperture after each shot. I didn't get these printed because I had no idea how it would turn out.

I treated this roll as an experiment, really. Getting back the scans was a nice surprise!

Dusted off the Mamiya 6 and loaded up some Ektar. I love this film in 35mm so I was excited to shoot in 120.

I had some seriously expired Velvia 100 in my fridge recently and decided to load it up and shoot around town in Queens and Hudson yards.

I had some of the roll left just in time for the NYC Pride parade! It passed right by my job in the West Village. I figured there would be lots of good color.

April-May, 2019. Vacation time! Our first time visiting New Orleans. Very photogenic city!

Not pictured: swamp tour. I couldn’t bring myself to take my Leica out on the water and thank goodness I didn’t because it poured!! I took my GR III, which easily fits in my pocket. That’s digital stuff, so I’m not putting it up here.

The weather was perfect while we were there. Sunny, not too hot. Absolutely perfect for shooting Portra. 10/10 would visit again.

March, 2019. Nice little snowstorm in NYC. Things were starting to get bad around 11:00 PM and I could’ve just sat around on the internet but decided to take some snow night shots. I’ve been on a Cinestill high lately and it was basically a perfect night to shoot, except for the whole bad weather thing. This is bleak stuff, folks.

NB, the Mamiya 6 is not weather sealed. Film gets wet. Weirdness ensues.

Feb-March, 2019. Back at it with Cinestill. This time I shot some during the day and with flash, just to see how it held up. Such fun film. Everything looks like Blade Runner.

One night back in December I had heard a lot of sirens late at night - an unusual amount. Next morning we learned of a huge fire that wiped out a few businesses on Queens Blvd. I loaded up some Delta 3200 which I hadn’t shot with in a while, and left for work early that day to see if I could get shots of the aftermath.

I decided to shoot this roll at iso 1600 because the grain at 3200 is just a little too much for me honestly, and I wouldn’t have to stop down so much during the day.

Just bumming around the city for the rest of the roll - which took me a little longer to shoot than I would’ve liked.

Dec 2018 - Jan 2019. Ilford Delta 3200 (shot at 1600), Summilux 35mm

November-December 2018. I had heard Fuji discontinued Acros 100 and since I’d never gotten to shoot it I jumped on it and got a 5 pack, but only in 120. It seemed there was a huge demand after the announcement but I still see it in stores…

Anyway I was eager to see what all the fuss was about, and, oh my goodness. Holy long exposures Batman!! This is real creamy stuff.

I was in the mood to experiment more with 120, so I picked up a few rolls of Cinestill 800T. I shot a whole roll in a couple hours, which I *never* do. So much fun, this film! Beware, though, I’ve heard the tungsten balanced film doesn’t perform so well during daylight. My roll didn’t even last till the next day!

November-December, 2018. I gained some confidence shooting slide film after getting good results with Ektachrome, so I decided to try Velvia 50 again. I’ve had a few rolls in my fridge for probably 3 years so the film is definitely expired.

I was pretty cavalier with my shooting, honestly, since I didn’t have high expectations with the roll itself. But looks like it held up! Lots of handheld shots at f/1.4; some tripod stuff; hell, I even used a flash! This was a fun one.

November, 2018. I had just gotten into shooting film when Kodak Ektachrome was discontinued, and to be honest I was so overwhelmed with Tri-X and Portra that I didn’t even think about it. It was a pretty big deal when Kodak announced its return about two years ago. It was finally released last month.

The stars aligned and my film arrived just in time to shoot some fall colors. Fingers crossed I didn’t screw it up - it is slide film, after all.

Getting the exposure right is key. As is shooting in even light. Shadows turn a weird blue/green, or highlights disappear. But when it’s good, it’s great! Best viewed on a light table or a projector, both of which I do not have :-/

October, 2018. It always takes me a long time to finish a roll of film, mainly because I take my time with each shot trying to get the focus and exposure right. This time around I tried to move a little faster - I had a roll of Pro 400H in my fridge that was nearing expiration, and since it’s a pretty forgiving film I figured I could be less cautious with my shooting. Also this is the first roll I’ve shot where I didn’t get prints, just in case it didn’t turn out!

I’ll admit I’m not the biggest fan of this film; It’s a little too magenta for my taste, and Kodak Portra is a little cheaper and has nice warm tones. But cooler weather calls for cooler film, I guess!

August-October, 2018. I was out of work for about a month and getting stir crazy - kind of hard to be inspired spending all day on craigslist and culinary job sites! Not to mention hard to justify spending money to get film developed until I started working again… Eventually found the time to get out and shoot.

I’ve never shot Ektar through my 50mm so I thought that would be fun! Also some medium format for good measure with my 75mm.

Mid-August, 2018. I wanted to finish off all my expired rolls of 120 film and got really excited to shoot medium format in 6x6 square with my Mamiya 6 again.

I liked shooting with it so much that I became obsessed with just the mere idea of the camera, but I wanted more. I decided to sink even more money into it, and I embarked on the arduous process of finding/buying the elusive 75mm f/3.5 lens, which was manufactured between 1989 and ‘99. After a failed Ebay purchase that I had to send back to Japan, and another last-second outbidding fail, I finally bit the (expensive) bullet and reached out to our lord and savior Bellamy Hunt, aka Japancamerahunter. My prayers were answered; a very-well-cared-for lens arrived at my door within a couple weeks, just in time to load up some Portra.

August, 2018. Haven’t done much or really any bar-hopping the past couple years, instead during that time spending all my “fun money” on photography - it was nice to go out again. This time for a good friend’s art opening at Max Fish in the LES. Flash on for this stuff!

June-August, 2018. Work sux!! Things got crazy and I had lost all energy to go out and shoot, even on my days off - hence the almost two months since my last roll. So I quit that motherfucker! Anyone hiring? ;-)

April, 2018. Back out west, this time for a friend’s wedding in San Francisco. Had a free day to wander the city. Short pit stop in Arizona to start.

It’s been about 3 years since I’ve shot Ektar and I forgot how insanely contrasty it is. Whether or not I nail the exposure, there’s a look in some of these pictures that social-media-platform photo filters definitely emulate…

March, 2018. NYC. I finally worked up the courage to use a flash unit on my M6. To hell with the purists; I like flash! I got some great results - on drugstore film no less!

Since my camera is all manual and mechanical, there was some serious math involved using guide numbers and whatnot. I've only used that flash on an all-auto Canon T50, so I had no idea it would actually work. I didn't shoot the whole roll with flash in case I screwed it up. I sure lucked out with this one.

I took the plunge and traded up my 35 Summicron for the 35mm Summilux FLE. It's bigger and heavier than the 'Cron, but I don't think my neck will notice the difference... Was basically one f-stop worth a couple grand on top of the other lens? Only time will tell, but all signs point to yes, so far :)

November to December, 2017. Quick Thanksgiving trip to Cleveland. I found my Dad's old Canon AE-1 and T50, and since my M6 is manual I decided to "borrow" the T50 with the 50mm 1.8. It also had a flash unit which piqued my interest for sure...

The T50 is pretty fun to shoot with since it's auto everything - but I didn't seem to care as much about what I shot and only got a couple good ones...

October to November, 2017. NYC and upstate.

I guess I'm old and my cameras are too heavy. Enter the Minolta TC-1. An absolute marvel. Magnesium body. Tack-sharp Rokkor 28mm f/3.5. Aperture priority, autofocus. About the size of a couple decks of cards. Dangerously easy to blast through film. Prone to failure. No longer being repaired. Too good to be true :-(

This camera was a joy to shoot with, but it had a prominent light leak that I didn't know about when I purchased it. The seller on eBay wanted to avoid negative feedback at all costs, so he paid for my return shipping and even reimbursed me for my film that was wasted!

After feeling more confident with the 50mm focal length I figured it would be a good time to shoot slides again. The fast 1.4 aperture allowed me to shoot everything handheld.

I purchased a Mamiya 6 with 50mm f/4 on eBay. It's a rangefinder so I figured it would be easy coming from my M6, right? Boy is this lens wide.

April to November, 2016. On our way into and out of "hot salty garbage" season in NYC. Finally getting used to the new lens. Kodak Portra 400, Kodak Tri-X 400, Summilux 50mm.

February, 2016. Delta 3200 at 3200 is pretty grainy (but not in a bad way). I did some research and found that the box speed is closer to 1000-1600 and the film is designed to be pushed because it can handle it. Either way, I love the look of it. This time around I shot it at 1600 and the results were so, so good.

My 30th birthday happened halfway through this roll and I bought a 50 'Lux as a gift for myself. I don't want to sound like a Leica fanboy, but despite the grain there's still insane sharpness in these photos due to Leica lenses being freaking awesome.

October, 2014. After living in NYC for a couple years I decided to visit Top of the Rock and the Empire State Building. At the time I was riding my bike to work as fast as I could across the Williamsburg Bridge, but I never really paid much attention to it and decided this time to walk over to the East Village to drop off my film.
